The £800,000 research Project is based in the use of light energy to generate hydrogen that would then become a zero emisión fuel. Julea Butt from the University of East Anglia leads the cooperation project among colleagues from the UEW, Cambridge University and Leeds.

Butt said: “We have been inspired by natural plant processes. During plant photosynthesis, fuels are made naturally from the energy in sunlight.” According to Butt they will have to fit tiny solar panels in microbes to harness sunlight to produce hydrogen. The production of power from hydrogen on demand are well-advanced; therefore this technology could be used to generate other fuels or even for pharmaceutical uses.
