The German government has debated, passed and presented its strategy supporting the hydrogen and the fuel cells industries. The strategy has involved five ministeries and they have agreed on the goal of 5 gigawatts of installed electrolyzer capacity, not 10 as proposed by the Science Minister Anja Karliczek. The strategy, will permit the remaining 5 gigawatts by 2035 if circumstances allow.

This strategy hasn’t been exactly what the national hydrogen and fuel cell association DWV and the national gas and water industries association DVGW were expecting. The presidents of both these associations hope that the remaining 5 gigawatts will be added by 2030 and not by 2035.

“We are planning to remove the EEG surcharge on hydrogen produced from clean energy sources”. The new pathway to a clean zero emission energy will affect not only the transport media both collective and individual but also the industry. Tesla and Nikola are already taking steps into this direction, while Volkswagen if only focused on batteries. The German government and the German industries shouldn’t lose this opportunity.
